Star anise has a strong, warm, sweet flavour similar to liquorice, fennel seeds and cloves. Popular in Asian cooking, and a key ingredient in Chinese five spice, simmer star anise in soups, sauces and marinades.
The pods do not soften during cooking, so ensure they are removed before serving.
